Most webmasters prefer to develop sites in WYSIWYG html editors. Basically you will see a graphical user interface and by clicking on different menu buttons, you will place your web page elements. More advanced web designers like to create the web pages by typing raw html code because they think that WYSIWYG editors bloat up the code unnecessarily …

Here are my favorite list of five Free HTML editors. I personally prefer Kompozer and I use others too.

1. Kompozer:

Easy to use html editor that creates W3C compliant html code. No need to install on your computer … Just download the files and unzip it. Click on the Kompozer icon to open up the program. No changes to the computers registry or no hassle of installing.

You can create both html and xhtml documents with ease. Also open up your default template to create new web pages.

Another feature I love is the inbuilt css editor. It makes very easy to add css styles.

Though I never used ftp uploading of pages from Kompozer directly, but this feature makes it easy to upload pages to your web site. Some people claim it alters php code, but I never had any problem with it!

2. Amaya:

Team of developers from w3.org are responsible for this wonderful editor. Amaya like Kompozer supports w3c compliant html code.

Amaya also has simple graphical user interface and built in css editor and makes it easy to create web pages. One more feature I like in Amaya is, you can create math equations very easily, which is not possible other editors I listed out here.

3. Arachnophilia:

Don’t get fooled by the web site look. The site may not be attractive, but the Arachnoplilia is.

After Kompozer, I like this software. Author says ” … be sure you have also installed the Java runtime before running Arachnophilia.” There is a download link to the free java program on the same page. Read all faq on the web site. Most of the routine questions are answered there.

Arachnoplilia also creates xhtml, php, asp documents along with html pages.

4. PSPad:

I installed and used it for few days while I was testing html editors that meet my requirements. PSPad also is a free html editor that supports many file formats like php, html, xhtml etc.

Other features of PSPad are syntax highlighting according to file type, full HEX editor, integrated TiDy library, integrated css editor etc. Another feature I liked is ASCII chart with HTML entities. This makes easy to integrate the special characters.

5. Trellian Webpage:

Another excellent WYSIWYG editor which produces w3c compliant html code. Very simple to use.

Other features like editing already created pages, absolute positioning of HTML elements, color highlighted HTML Editor are very useful for you. One feature I love is drag and drop interface such as images, block of text etc.
