What is an ip number?

Ip number is ‘Internet Protocol Number’. A unique number consisting of 4 parts separated by dots like in 11.22.33.44. Every machine that is on the internet has an unique IP number and one or more domain names are associated with it.

Example: 11.22.33.44 is difficult to remember. But site.com is easy to remember. When you type site.com in your browser, it will look up for the ip number associated with it in dns records and display your site from your machine.

But buying ips from your host costs you money. It will vary from $1.00 per month to $2.50 per month. But if you are hosting your sites on your own VPS, you don’t have to worry about your shared ip as only your sites will share that ip.

You really need a dedicated ip number for your site?

If your site is a simple hobby site or non-commercial site, you may not need a dedicated ip but there are certain situations where a webmaster needs to get a dedicated ip for their site.

* Using secure URLs:

If you want to process credit card transactions on your site with your own payment gateway, then you need a dedicated ip. This enables your buyers to access the cart interface where they enter their credit card information securely and safely.

* rDNS set up:

Some email marketers use dedicated ip to set up rDNS for their web site. Ths is one of the methods to improve email deliverability.

* Your own mail servers:

Most of the time email from your domains goes through your hosts ip number, which is server shared ip. But some webmasters like to get a dedicated ip to pipe email from their domain to that ip. This has the advantage of getting and maintaining a clean ip for mail servers that are used for out-going email.

As it ia a common practice for web hosts to set up many domains on one shared ip, if one of those webmasters were spamming, then your server shared ip will be blacklisted. So your email going through that shared ip are also be considered as junk or spam by email clients.

* Linking between your web sites:

Getting backlinks to a web site from different ip addresses is another way of increasing Page rank. So webmasters try to get ips from different C-Blocks and hosts one site on each ip and link between them.
